Miss Stine’s Geometry classes recently completed a lesson on Trigonometric Ratios. At the conclusion of the lesson, students engaged in a Virtual Reality simulation through Prisms. This allowed the students to learn math through movement, experience, and meaningful discovery.

National Honor Society members wrapped up their community service for the year with a collection drive in partnership with the Columbia County Victim/Witness Program for National Crime Victims' Rights Week. National Honor Society members participated in other community service endeavors throughout the school year, including hosting two Red Cross blood drives in which 30 units of blood were collected from students and staff.

Mr. Lindenmuth's Contemporary Issues class, as part of their Coal Region unit, went on a field trip to Blaschak Coal Mine Site in Centralia on Wednesday, April 26. They learned about surface mining for coal from Blaschak Superintendent Dale Lindenmuth. They had the opportunity to see the large equipment that runs the operation and the overall details of how companies mine for coal in the Northeast Anthracite coal region. Students also to got to take a tour with Mr. Joe Wayne in the Hibernian House in Girardville and learn about John Kehoe, the supposed leader of the famous Molly Maguires. It was a great trip that explored the rich culture and history of the coal region in our area.

The SCA Science Club presented to Elementary students about the importance of Earth Day and how we can limit damage to our planet. Each student received a live stake to plant at home to grow a native bush. Earth Day is Saturday, April 22, so be sure to celebrate by being kind to the planet!

Students from Mrs. Roulin's advanced art elective classes were invited to a Studio Day Experience event hosted by Bloomsburg University’s Art Department. Throughout the day, students participated in a session for each of the following courses: printmaking, bookbinding, letterpress, sculpture, fiber arts, and drawing. The students were impressed with the new state of the art building, the program’s offerings, and the feeling of community among the faculty and students. All of this, so close to home.

Southern Columbia Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students competed at the State Leadership Conference in Hershey, PA. The chapter and individuals won awards. CHAPTER AWARDS: William H. Selden Outstanding Chapter- 7th place (there are around 270 PA schools with FBLA chapters and SCA FBLA placed 7th in the state for this award! It recognizes the above-and-beyond efforts of students and their advisors). Local Market Share Award- 9th place (for having over 16% of Southern’s student body in FBLA). INDIVIDUAL COMPETITIVE EVENTS: These students have qualified for the National Conference in Atlanta this Summer! Students in Mrs. Becker's Office Applications class are working on a culminating Food Truck Project that requires them to use skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Publisher, Excel and Access) that they have learned throughout the year. Students are designing and creating the necessary files and materials needed to start a Food Truck business. One of the first phases of the project involves constructing a prototype of their truck.

The Chess Club tournament which began with 12 participants in Grades 9-12 came to a close this morning with a championship match between Milind Kapadiya and Vincent Maresca. It was Maresca who prevailed in the title bout, and he received a hand carved chess board and the pieces for his victory.

Students interested in law attended a special event on April 11 hosted by the Columbia County Courthouse where three Supreme Court judges listened to arguments on appeals from across Pennsylvania. The judges, Judith Ference Olson, Jack Panella, and Deborah A. Kunselman, expressed their gratitude to participating schools. The trip was led by Mrs. Roughton who opened the opportunity to her high school Gifted students and upperclassmen.

The Music Department spent last week at Disney! The band performed three songs on stage at Disney Springs and participated in activities to learn about the history of Disney World and Walt Disney. The group toured Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom among other locations.

Yesterday, the High School Peer Leadership group and S.A.V.E.(Students Against Violence Everywhere) club teamed up to spread mental health awareness. Many of these students attended the Mental Health Awareness presentation at Danville High School in the evening, sponsored by their counterparts, the SPM.
