Attention parents of incoming K-8th grade girls: The SCA Girls Soccer Team is holding their 21st annual Girls Soccer Skills Camp! Camp will be held July 10-12th, 2023 from 5PM – 8PM. 4th Grade took their field trip to Hershey's ZooAmerica yesterday, and they encountered critters like Millie the skunk, a legless lizard, and so many more wildlife wonders throughout the day.
As a culminating activity for their Animals and Habitats module, Kindergarten had a "beary" good time learning about bears. They learned about different types of bears, where they live, what they eat, and had a very special guest visitor! They also created an art project together.
First Grade students recently participated in Nature Day. The students ventured to the Nature Trail and had the opportunity to learn at 5 different stations including Stream and Pond Study, Aquatic Life/ Wild Critters, Tree Planting, Nature Bingo, and Pollination Friends. This was an exciting day for the students!
Second Grade students released the Painted Lady butterflies that they raised during their time spent studying a unit on insects.
HELP US ADOPT A GORILLA! Change for Ivan - During Library Time, Second Grade has been reading the novel, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. The inspired story of a real silverback gorilla named Ivan who was held captive for 27 years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta. The Zoo houses the nation's largest collection of Western Lowland Gorillas. To complement our reading, Second Grade will be collecting any spare change to raise funds so we can adopt our own Western Lowland Gorilla through World Wildlife. Any extra funds will be used as a donation to World Wildlife, which supports protected areas of the Western lowland gorilla's habitat.
Second Grade students finished a unit about LIGHT. Here, students are studying refraction. They are using a triangular prism to see light bending, creating a rainbow.

The Spring BOGO fair is here! Elementary Students will shop the fair during their library times starting on Monday, May 15 and ending on Friday, May 19. The Fair will continue online through our school's book fair link through May 28th. Day 4 will be scheduled at different times throughout the week. A packet is being sent home for families. Students can pay with cash, check (written to Southern Columbia Area School District), or eWallet through Scholastic.

Elementary students helped to set up their work for the Art Show.
Jonna Reigle, paraprofessional, found this empty yellowjacket nest around her home and showed the second graders the intricate and delicate workmanship of their habitat. These students are learning about insects and were amazed by the ability of the bees to create this nest.

Miss Camryn Kirkner, a high school co- op in Mrs. Sharrow's room, spends an hour everyday "working" with her Kindergarten friends. Today she enjoyed reading to all of the students. Miss Camyrn has created a special bond with the class since August through the co-op program.

The SCA Science Club presented to Elementary students about the importance of Earth Day and how we can limit damage to our planet. Each student received a live stake to plant at home to grow a native bush. Earth Day is Saturday, April 22, so be sure to celebrate by being kind to the planet!
Congratulations to Eli Politza for winning the Read Across America cake competition! In Elementary Library, students were encouraged to make Dr. Seuss a birthday cake to celebrate his birthday. The cakes had to be made using recyclable materials or craft products - no real food was permitted in the contest. Eli did a phenomenal job paying strong attention to details of The Lorax, while also making his cake very colorful and fun. His cake may just have to become a new shelf sitter in our library. Our Librarian, Mrs. Kane-Gilger, took Eli's cake to Kim's Confectionary Creations in Catawissa where Kim Deska, the baker and cake decorator, brought his cake to life! She made a delicious confetti cake with vanilla buttercream icing, and even used Eli's handwriting in the design. Eli's cake is on the right, and Kim's cake is on the left. We are so grateful for her talent and creativity. Eli's class was so thrilled for him and they enjoyed eating the cake he designed. You can find Kim on Facebook under Kim's Confectionary Creations.
