Students in Mrs. Madara's Third and Fourth Grade STEM classes recently participated in an apple stacking challenge. Students were only allowed to use toothpicks and Play-Doh while attempting to build the tallest apple tower possible. Marisa Rarig, Cecilia Krieger, Leah Mensch, and Mollie Dermes built the tallest tower out of all of the Fourth Grade classes with a tower that stood 21 and ¾ inches tall!

What a great start to the year for the 2023 Tiger Marching Band! Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. McWilliams, the music program has been flourishing, with numbers growing greatly for the first time in over five years. From a Disney trip at the end of last school year, to a Philadelphia Orchestra trip coming up, the band has been keeping busy and having a blast making friends and growing closer to one another. The band also has had a new class pet edition: four goldfish that they won on their trip to the Bloomsburg Fair. The band students took up a collection of money in order to purchase all of the necessary supplies needed to keep the fish in the band room. The band welcomes any students that are interested in joining to come check it out! Contributor: Saira Sodergren, Journalism Staff Member

Second Graders had a great time making full-sized sunflowers in Mrs. Brown's Art class. Students are pictured in the art room proudly displaying their painting skills. Students also practiced their fine motor skills by cutting out their masterpieces very carefully and then practiced knot-making, using raffia, to embellish the stem. Students focused on the elements of line, shape, pattern, and color. Blending their paint was encouraged. All Second Grade classes will have their flowers displayed in the hallway outside of the large group area in the elementary school during the fall season. Academics are a top priority here at the Southern Columbia Middle School. Along with classroom learning, Seventh Grade Science also focuses on hands-on learning. Students recently participated in a lab to explore the impacts of particle motion in matter by thermal energy. They investigated the effects of increasing and decreasing thermal energy on physical properties of water including cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension. In this specific experiment, they were able to test if heat affected the amount of water droplets that could fit on a penny. Contributors: MolliLyn Petro and Siena Rovito, Journalism Staff Members

Third Grader Adalyn Dickey is SCA's Citizen of the Month. She is an all-around wonderful student. She is a hard worker, a great leader, and a sincere friend. On Friday, September 29, our Librarian, Mrs. Kane-Gilger, hosted a virtual author visit for students in First and Second Grade. Students met author and New York Times bestselling illustrator Mike Lowery, who spoke to students about his talent in illustrating and his writing process. He read excerpts to students from his book, "Everything Awesome About Dangerous Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Beasts." Mike Lowery also led a directed draw for our students. Students followed along and drew characters from some of his recent works. Mike Lowery has worked on dozens of books for children and adults and has lent his talent in illustrating to food trucks, greeting cards, and magazines, in addition to books. Some of his illustration clients include The New York Times, Reader's Digest, Mac World, The Atlanta Braves, Disney, Nick Jr magazine, Hallmark, and Warby Parker. He now travels nationally giving talks about art and books to schools, universities, and bookstores. The Tiger community was thrilled to have the wonderful opportunity to welcome and meet him.

The Southern Columbia Cheerleaders held the 11th annual SCA Youth Cheer Night on Friday, September 22, during the Varsity home football game against the Danville Ironmen. Any students in 1st through 6th Grade were eligible to participate in this event. This year there were 63 youth cheerleaders in attendance. Each Varsity cheerleader was paired with 3-4 youth cheerleaders. The youth cheerleaders were able to perform chants, dances, and cheers on the Tigers’ sideline. They were also given the opportunity to stunt with the Varsity cheerleaders. The cheerleaders had a blast that evening cheering on the Tigers to a victory over Danville. The Southern Columbia Varsity cheerleaders want to thank all the participants and are looking forward to seeing everyone on the sideline again next year!📣🐅 Contributor: Aubrey Heath, Journalism Staff Member

Since the beginning of September, Mrs. Serafini’s 8th Grade classes have been very busy with their American Revolution unit. They learned about many different strategies and people that were involved in the American Revolution through fun games and projects, including capture the flag and studying Washington’s blueprints for shelters in Valley Forge. In the coming weeks, they will be starting their “That’s My Girl!” unit, where they study many of the important women who were involved in the American Revolution. They will also be creating projects about these ‘SHE-ros,’ and holding elections for the ‘Ultimate SHE-ro.’ Contributors: Madelina Eick and Saira Sodergren, Journalism Staff Members
