Dear Parents and Guardians,
Considering recent events and ongoing concerns regarding threats to school safety, we want to ensure that our community remains vigilant and proactive in protecting our children. Several local districts have faced challenges related to threats, and it is crucial that we work together to maintain a safe environment for all students.
Key Points for Parents/Guardians:
1. Remind Your Children About the Dangers of Threats: Discuss the seriousness of making threats, even in jest. Explain the potential consequences and the impact such actions can have on their peers and the school community. Encourage open communication. Let your children know they can talk to you or a trusted adult if they ever feel unsafe or hear about potential threats.
2. Monitor Social Media Activity: Regularly check your children’s social media accounts. Be aware of their online interactions and the content they are exposed to. Educate your children about responsible social media use and the importance of reporting any suspicious or concerning behavior they encounter online.
3. “See Something, Say Something”: Reinforce the importance of reporting any unusual or suspicious activity. If your child sees or hears something that doesn’t seem right, they should feel empowered to speak up. Remind them that their vigilance can help prevent potential incidents and keep their school safe.
o Resources for individuals to share concerns:
1. SoCo Concerns
2. Safe to Say Something
Our Commitment:
We are committed to working closely with local law enforcement and other relevant authorities to address any threats promptly and effectively. Our priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We will continue to implement and update security measures as needed to ensure a secure learning environment. A reminder to students and parents. Just like you would not get on an airplane and scream “hijack” or walk into a movie theater and scream “fire” students and parents must realize you do not get on the internet or social media and say “school shooting” or threaten harm on schools. Our district will always push to the fullest extent of the law that students are prosecuted for any such action.
Your Role:
As parents/guardians, your involvement is crucial. By staying informed, monitoring your children’s activities, and fostering open communication, you play a vital role in maintaining the safety of our school community.
Thank you for your cooperation and dedication to keeping our schools safe. Together, we can create a secure and supportive environment for our children to learn and grow.
Sincerely,
Mr. Becker
Superintendent

Southern Columbia Area School District Community it appears that YouTube is having technical difficulties this evening causing the live stream of tonight's school board meeting not to stream. The meeting is being recorded and will be posted once the YouTube issues are solved.

Our Southern Columbia Junior Firefighters are proud to be a part of an amazing program. Being a Junior Firefighter allows them to protect and serve their community while being role models for younger students. In addition to serving their community, this program allows them to gain valuable skills, like being better problem solvers and being able to work well in stressful situations. This program is so useful in providing opportunities to high school students and in giving them a great after school activity that not only benefits themselves, but others as well. They can also choose to work toward becoming an EMT through the invaluable training and triage experience they gain. The Junior Firefighters program is great for anyone who wants to make a difference in their community. As Junior Firefighter Chase Compton says, “It feels good to do good.” A special thanks also goes to Ryan Davis, Aidyn McHale, and Russell Longenberger, fellow firefighters, for providing information for this piece.

Fifth Grade students in Mrs. Coombe's class recently put the scientific method to practice.

Students in Mr. Johnston’s 10th Grade Honors English class recently read "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck. Students took a test on the novel after they finished reading the book. The exam encompassed plot, figurative language, and symbols within the work. Students are currently writing an essay about the book that is either a compare and contrast essay or a five-paragraph essay on the topic of their choice. They only have in class time to write it, and the essay cannot be taken out of the classroom. For example, one student in Mr. Johnston’s 3rd period class, Karlene Wiehe, is writing her essay comparing and contrasting "Of Mice and Men" and "The Grapes of Wrath."
