7th Grade Science students took part in an environmental education program called "Eels in the Classroom" this school year. Students learned about the value and importance of migratory fish through the ecosystem functions they perform. The culmination of the program involved releasing the American Eels that they raised in the classroom since August into Roaring Creek during the last week of school.
Cheyenne Steiner, Caitlin Harris, Lauren Levan, and Owen Eyer were named Students of the Month for May by the 7th Grade Team. Congratulations!
Students in grades 3, 4 and 6 attended a STEM camp yesterday at Bloomsburg University.

Mr. Kelchner's 8th grade Science students built and launched model rockets in the annual project that is part of the study of human spaceflight. After building and spray-painting the rockets over the course of a week, the launches took place on Monday, May 20. Students competed for the highest, straightest flight, as well as a successful parachute deployment and recovery. The highest-flying rockets reached altitudes of nearly 1600 feet. 🚀
The Class of 2028 (8th graders) have also been participating in a variety of celebration activities prepared by their teachers during the last full week of school. These include the aforementioned model rocket launches, a tug-of-war battle of the homerooms, a kickball tournament, a poetry competition, and a civil war field day featuring reenactors, experts, and artifacts. Congratulations to Mr. Kelchner's homeroom for going undefeated in the double-elimination tug-of-war tournament bracket! 🐯

Middle School Envirothon students recently attended the Susquehanna Valley Envirothon at Montour Preserve. It was a great day of learning about Pennsylvania wildlife, aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, and land use. Special thanks to our local county conservation districts for hosting this incredible event each year! 🌿🐟🌲

Faculty at the high school bid farewell and good luck to some of tomorrow's best and brightest educators! Ellie Rowe, who spent time with Mrs. Troutman and Miss Stine, and Lily Savoy and Kimberly Speece, who worked with Mrs. Becker and Mr. Williams, will be graduating from Commonwealth University on Saturday. Southern Columbia wants to thank these ladies for their time and efforts with our students and wishes these future teachers all the best in their career endeavors.

On April 11th and 12th, after an eight-week learning process, 8th graders in Mr. Kelchner’s science classes presented their sustainable building design projects to a panel of engineers. The winning group was selected by a guest engineer who played the role of the building owner. The winners included Jack Garrigan, Carter Mensch, and Garrett Pesarchick. These students presented the details of their design with knowledge and professionalism. Their building had terraces and overhangs that gave it character, and it included a unique outdoor dining area for the building’s employees. They described an array of thoughtfully chosen energy-saving features and amenities, while still managing to come in just under their allotted budget of $20 million. Their “design firm” was able to win the contract by demonstrating how their systems reduced the operating cost through lowered electricity and water bills, using their calculated reductions to justify their design choices. Among other prizes, they will have their names engraved on the classroom trophy that features all past winners of the competition.
A big thank you to the guest judges who generously gave of their time again this year to be with us for two days. These included Eric Fedder, 2005 SCA valedictorian, architectural engineer, and senior project manager for Project Management Advisors Inc. of San Diego, California; John Kelchner, electrical engineer and retired President & CEO of Citizen’s Electric Power Company in Lewisburg, PA; and Noah Blusius, SCA alumnus, architectural engineer with Alexander Building Construction in Harrisburg.
Congratulations to all 8th grade students for your outstanding effort and successful collaboration on a very challenging real-world project!
