Food of the Month Initiative Off to a Great Start!

As part of an initiative to promote wellness and Farm to School partnerships, Southern Columbia Area High School and Middle School students will have access to locally grown food, served once a month at lunchtime. The first  Food of the Month Day was held on Wednesday, March 12th and proved to be a hit with the students.

Nominations for Distinguished Alumnus Will Close March 21st

The Southern Columbia Area School District will be accepting nominations for the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award until March 21, 2014. The Distinguished Alumnus should be someone who has gone on to achieve success in their field of endeavor and/or has had a positive influence on the students and community of the Southern Columbia Area. Graduates of Southern Columbia Area High School or any high school that formed the Southern Columbia Area School District are eligible to be nominated.

Tickets for HS Musical Now on Sale!

The High School Music Department and Encore have announced that tickets for this year's musical, Into the Woods, are now on sale. Performance dates are Friday, March 21st at 7:00 PM, Saturday , March 22nd at 7:00 PM and Sunday, March 23rd at 2:00 PM.

Southern Swimmer Headed to States

Later this week the 2013-2014 PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships will get underway. This event is noteworthy to Southern Columbia Area because one of its own, High School junior Jacob Ryan, will be among those student-athletes who have earned a trip to the swimming and diving championships. Through a cooperative agreement with the Bloomsburg Area School District, Jacob has competed throughout the winter sports season as a member of the Bloomsburg Area H.S. Boys Varsity Swimming Team.

Wrestlers Win Silver Medals at State Tournament

Congratulations are extended to Kent Lane (junior, 138), Todd Lane (freshman, 120) and Blake Marks (sophomore, 152) who all won silver medals at the 2013-2014 PIAA Class AA State Wrestling Championship.  The students and their coaches represented Southern Columbia Area extremely well and are to be commended for their outstanding accomplishment!  Wrestling great Dan Gable once stated, “More enduring than any other sport, wrestling teaches self-control and pride.

Wrestlers Earn Trip to States

Congratulations are extended to Kent Lane (138), Todd Lane (120) and Blake Marks (152) who are headed to the Giant Center in Hershey to compete in this year's PIAA Class AA State Wrestling Championship.  The three student-athletes have enjoyed successful seasons winning a combined 91 out of 101 matches heading into the championships. We wish the boys good luck and continued success at states! The first matches begin Thursday, March 6th at 9:00 AM and continue into Saturday night.

SCA Awarded a PDE Safe Schools Grant

The Southern Columbia Area School District has been awarded a Safe Schools Targeted Grant as announced by Acting Secretary of Education Carolyn Dumaresq. SCA received the maximum grant award of $25,000 and will use the funds for security enhancements in its school buildings. The goal of the competitive grant program is to prevent and reduce incidents of violence in schools.  "Pennsylvania's schools should be a safe haven for students, where their focus is on academics and reaching their highest potential," Dumaresq said.

Student Meal-Charging Guidelines Explained

While the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not require schools to serve unpaid meals, the Southern Columbia Area School District extends meal-charging as a courtesy to those students who forget or lose their lunch money. There are limits to this courtesy however, as the District must protect itself against those who take advantage of this well-intentioned act. When parents fail to pay for school meals, both the students and the School District are hurt.

SCA's Forensics Team to Compete in District Competition

On Saturday, February 22nd, thirteen Southern Columbia Area High School students will compete in a district speech and debate tournament hosted by Danville Area High School. The forensics tournament is slated to begin at 9:00 AM with the following students representing SCA: Adam Unger, Blair Johnston, Mary Scopelliti, Olivia Greene, Kathy Koschoff-Rapkin, Aiyona Hayman, Lena Becker, Matt Lupold, Sunny Sen, Tom Marinelli, Michael Willhoit, Emily Vitkauskus and Julia Mudrock.
