HS and MS Recognized by Project Tomorrow

Southern Columbia Area High School and South Columbia Area Middle School were recently recognized for their efforts in using 2013 Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey data to help make informed decisions. SCA school leaders used the survey results to help make curriculum and budgeting decisions including the viability of implementing a 1:1 laptop program in the High School and to gauge student interest in creating a Middle School STEM elective course.

Red Ribbon Week to be Celebrated at G.C. Hartman

The students and staff of G.C. Hartman  Elementary Center will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, October 27th through Monday, November 3rd.  The concept of having a Red Ribbon Week was started by the National Family Partnership. Red Ribbon Week serves to promote drug awareness and prevention, especially in youth and teens. "G.C.

Student Wins Bloomsburg Fair Science Award

A project prepared and submitted by senior student Brady Petrovich, was named the Walmart Outstanding Booth Award for Science winner as part of the closing ceremonies of the 2014 Bloomsburg Fair.  Brady's display included information pertaining to acid mine drainage and an experiment entitled The Miller-Urey Experiment. "This experiment was first attempted in the late 1950’s and was designed to simulate early Earth conditions such as early life," stated Brady.

PA Department of Health Issues Advisory

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has asked all schools to post the following Ebola Health Advisory:

Ebola is a severe, often deadly illness that affects humans and non-human primates like monkeys, gorillas and chimpanzees. History’s worst outbreak of the disease is occurring now in West Africa, and the U.S. recently had its first travel-related case of Ebola in Texas.  It is a reality that more cases could be confirmed in other states – including Pennsylvania.

Board Membership No Longer Restricted by Regions

Last month, the District filed a petition with the Columbia County Court seeking to change the way Southern Columbia Area voters elect their School Board members. The petition asked the Court to allow Southern Columbia Area voters to elect all nine Board of Education members "at-large."  At-large allows residents living anywhere within the boundaries of the District to run for the School Board. At the time of the petition, only thee of the nine seats could be filled that way. The rest were filled by a region-based system.

October's Fresh Food Initiative will Feature Locally-Grown Apples

SCA's Wellness Committee recently announced that the next Fresh Food of the Month Day will take place on Wednesday, October 22nd, and will feature the "crunchy texture and delicious taste of apples while they are in the peak of their season." All students in  grades K-12 will receive an apple variety from three local orchards/farms:  Leiby's Family Farms, Rohrbach's, and  

New Leaders to Direct SCA's Business Affairs

For the past several weeks a transaction in leadership within the Business Office has been underway with departing Business Manager Mike Sokoloski set to turn all fiscal responsibilities over to new stewards, Charles Mannello and Denise Kreisher, at the close of the workday on Friday, October 17th. Mr. Mannello will serve the District as Business Consultant while Mrs. Kreisher will assume duties as Business Office Supervisor.
