High School Receives National Recognition

Congratulations to Principal Jim Becker and his High School staff for achieving national ranking in U.S. News and World Report's Best High School's report. Nationwide, 19,411 schools were eligible to be included in the 2014 Best High schools rankings.

Empty Bowls Celebration Rescheduled for June 1st

The Empty Bowls celebration originally scheduled for April 26th has been moved to Sunday, June 1st in order to avoid conflicts with several other school and community activities also scheduled that day. The event will now become an ice cream social. The Empy Bowls is a joint community service project and fundraiser of the Senior Class and the Art Club. The project is designed to raise awareness of the fact that hunger is a problem in our region.

FBLA Fundraising Effort Underway

SCA's FBLA chapter is in the midst of a fundraising effort designed to offset costs needed to send seven students to FBLA's National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The students placed in FBLA's state competition and earned the right to compete in nationals to be held during the conference. The students and their competitive event are listed below:

Appointments for Sports Physicals Now Being Scheduled

Appointments for 2014-2015, sports physicals are now being scheduled. Physicals are by appointment only and will be held on Friday, June 6th from 3:45 until 8:00 PM in the High School training room.  Athletic Trainer Katie Fisher has created a Google form which will allow for online scheduling. Parents can also schedule an appointment by calling Mrs. Fisher at (570) 356-3529 or by e-mailing her at kfisher@scasd.us.

Green Living

As part of their environmental unit, students in grade 5 will be undertaking a unique recycling effort.  In an attempt to better understand "Green Living," we should better understand the recycling loop.  While it is extremely important to recycle, it is equally important to use and purchase products made from recycled materials.  Students will be collecting plastic to recycle with a Vermont company  that creates reusable shopping bags.

FBLA Wins Big at State Competition: 7 Students Advance to Nationals

Southern Columbia Area High School made an exceptional showing at the 2014 Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference held in Hershey last week with seventeen students placing in the top ten in the state! Seven of these students have also qualified for national competition! "We are full of SoCo pride!" stated FBLA Advisor Lori Shively.  This year's performance is one of the strongest on record for Southern's FLBA chapter.

The True Facts About College Recruiting

On Monday, April 21st, the Southern Columbia Area Athletic Department will present a 60-minute workshop entitled "The Realities of College Recruiting." It will be presented by Jack Renkens, a former college coach and recruiting expert. The program is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Southern Columbia Area High School Auditorium beginning at 7:00 PM.
