Students Participate in TV Taste-Test

Students in Mrs. Janelle Burcicki's 7th grade English class recently participated in a televised taste test produced by Kerry Brazen of WNEP-TV.  Kerry is the station's "official taste tester" putting all sorts of new food products to the test.

New to You Exchange Now Open for Business!

A clothing exchange/swap program, New to You Exchange, is now available to all High School students. According to organizer Ms. Emily Karas, a wide variety of clothing, accessories, and toiletries are available for both male and female students at no charge.

SCA Excels at 2017 Envirothon!

Southern Columbia Area was represented at the 2017 Envirothon by five teams of students, led by advisor Ms. Kristen Vitkauskas. The teams, consisting of five students each, engaged in team building and leadership experiences, as well as training and testing in five natural resource categories: soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues.

Idol Competition Provides Students Inspiration!

While students rarely view test-taking as fun, G.C. Hartman Elementary Center's students typically look forward to the administration of Pennsylvania's standardized tests as this also means it's time for the annual PSSA Idol competition!

SCA in the News: Southern SAT Scores Are Above State Average

Recently, the Sunbury Daily Item published a story regarding student performance on the SATs. Of the twelve schools studied, Southern Columbia was among the six which finished above the state average. Click here to read the story.

Southern Columbia Community Foundation Has Formed!

A group of dedicated volunteers has formed an educational foundation whose goal is to enhance educational opportunities for Southern Columbia Area's students and staff. The group's 501 (c) (3) paperwork filed in February 2017, has been approved, and it is now recognized as a nonprofit organization known as the Southern Columbia Community Foundation. The SCCF has begun to hold regular board and committee meetings and has been devoting much time planning and implementing initatives which will benefit the District's educational programs.

Budget Season Brings Focus on Fiscal Matters

A study on school funding and spending released in March 2017, Spending Impact on Student Performance: A Rural Perspective, reports that Southern Columbia lacks adequate state funding. The report concludes that Southern Columbia needs to receive a 54.3% increase in state funding in order to receive its fair share of the money being allocated to Pennsylvania's schools.

Emma Steely Advances to FBLA National Competition!

Congratulations are extended to sophomore Emma Steely whose performance at the Pennsylvania FBLA State Leadership Conference earned her the right to compete at the association's National Conference this summer!

2nd Annual Cake Competition Proves to be Fun Learning Experience!

Students enrolled in International Foods and Desserts, taught by Ms. Emily Karas, recently put their culinary skills to a test through participation in the 2nd Annual Cake Competition.
