In August 2019, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) provided school districts with an opportunity to apply for the use of a Flexible Instructional Day (FID) when schools are cancelled due to inclement weather ("snow days") or other unplanned or emergency situations. On a FID, students will complete learning activities and assignments provided by their teachers at home on the day that otherwise would have been cancelled. A FID will count as a school day, with students and staff fulfilling responsibilities and obligations outside the classroom walls of Southern Columbia. In October 2019, PDE approved Southern Columbia's application and granted the District permission to use of up to five Flexible Instructional Days per school year, for the next three years through the 2021-2022, school year. To learn more about Southern Columbia's FID program please read these Frequesntly Asked Questions and visit the District's FID page found under the About SCA. tab of this website. The District will use its first FID on the fourth unplanned school closure. In the meantime, students and staff will practice and review the procedures to be used on a Flexible Instructional Day. For additional information please contact me at pcaputo@scasd.us or any Principal of the District's schools.
